Is divorce part of the movie of your life?

It is sometimes fun to think of favorite movies, breaking them into various genres and styles. Is the original "Star Wars" the best science fiction movie ever or does it more properly fall into the action genre? Which is the best thriller, the scariest horror movie and the best example of film noir, comedy and romance?

Is Hamilton among the nation's divorce capitals?

Which cities do you think of when someone mentions the divorce capitals of the U.S.? Las Vegas is probably near the top of many lists. Reno could be up there, along with other places associated fairly or unfairly with quick endings to marriages.

Ways to help your children during the divorce process

There's sometimes a very negative perception of divorce when it relates to children. Although we can agree that divorce can be more challenging when children are involved, it doesn't mean that parents cannot find healthy and meaningful ways of interacting with their children during the process. When parents take a proactive approach and keep communication lines open with their children, children can thrive despite the split.

Divorces slow for the holiday season

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for many Butler County shops and stores. But things slow down at family court in the weeks leading up to the holidays. That's because many parents who are contemplating divorce try to put their differences aside until a new year has been rung in.

Relationship expert: Take time to repeatedly tell kids about divorce

It is perfectly understandable that parents would be apprehensive about discussing divorce with their children. A professor and director of a family studies program says that sometimes parents try to get by spending just a few minutes explaining their divorce to their kids. Dr. Carol Bruess says research shows that about 75 percent of parents are not doing enough discussing of the divorce, spending an average of only 10 minutes talking about it with their kids. While she doesn't advocate an in-depth explanation of child custody disputes or other divorce matters, Bruess does urge parents to reassure the kids that the split is not their fault and was not something they could have prevented.

The more things change...

There was no internet, no television and no radio. Though life today is in many ways very different in Butler County than life was 100 years ago, in some important ways it is very much alike. People still fall in love, get married and have children. And sometimes those marriages end in divorce that can be complicated by child custody disputes, property disagreements or differences about just about anything and everything else. The New York Post recently went through recently unsealed divorce records from a century ago. Unlike Ohio, New York State seals those records for 100 years.
