Advice columnist: If possible, set aside emotions in divorce

The decision to divorce is rarely an easy one. For most people, divorce means the end of a relationship they once thought would last forever.

A recent column on the stresses and emotions of divorce urges people to try to put their emotions aside as they enter the legal process. When anger and hurt and other emotions lead the way, it can mean the divorce will involve attempts to inflict as much pain as possible.

One big reason to try to remove emotions from your divorce, the columnist argues, is that anger leads to petty behavior which leads to bigger legal fees than are absolutely required. So rather than settling disputes over property division in negotiations, people can spend time and money fighting over a table or a car or some other belonging that neither party really cares about.

Even more difficult for many couples to resolve: a dispute over child custody and child support.

The columnist argues that divorcing without a family law attorney is ideal, but then quickly acknowledges that in many situations it is imperative to enter the divorce process with the help of a lawyer experienced in divorce and resolution of child custody and property division disputes.

At the Law Office of Kristen L. Campbell, LLC, we represent clients not only in those family law problems, but also in spousal support (alimony), marriage dissolution, military divorce, mediation, fathers' rights, grandparents' rights, adoptions and domestic violence matters. The process can begin with a confidential, free initial consultation.
