Military divorce can be even harder

Everyone understands that divorce can be one of the most trying experiences a person can go through. It can be filled with anger, resentment and deep disagreements over child custody, property division and more.

When divorce involves a member of the military, there are factors that can complicate matters further, including relocations, deployments and division of a retirement account.

A recent article on a news site for veterans contained insights from a family law attorney and Army veteran who lives far from us in Hamilton, Ohio.

The Arizona resident said that one of the most important considerations for a member of the military to consider -- or for someone whose spouse is a member of the military -- is choice of lawyer. He said that with so much at stake -- child custody, visitation, benefits, etc. -- you want to get favorable results.

He said that even with an experienced family law attorney on your side, you have work of your own to do. Organization is key, he said.

Collect paperwork on taxes, home ownership, bank accounts, debts and so on. In that way, your lawyer will have crucial information needed for negotiations or litigation.

Items to sit down and discuss with your family law attorney include the following:

  • Military retirement pay/pension
  • A Thrift Savings Plan (TSP)
  • Survivor Benefits Plan
  • TRICARE (and possible transitional coverage)
  • Base privileges

At the Law Office of Kristen L. Campbell, LLC, our experience and our knowledge of military divorce can help you through a difficult time.
