Divorces slow for the holiday season

On Behalf of | Dec 7, 2016 | Child Custody |

The holiday season is the busiest time of year for many Butler County shops and stores. But things slow down at family court in the weeks leading up to the holidays. That’s because many parents who are contemplating divorce try to put their differences aside until a new year has been rung in.

Statistics show that year after year, fewer people file for divorce in the holiday season, but that proceedings invariably pick up in January.

A divorce lawyer writing for the Huffington Post notes that “people try their best to make peace for the holidays and to give their marriage and family situations another chance.” Sometimes it works out, of course, and in other cases, the couples begin the process of ending their marriages.

The job of divorce professionals, the attorney writes, is to help clients understand what the legal system can do for them. Perhaps the two most important matters courts can determine for parents: parenting plans (custody) and property division.

Of course, it is almost always best if the divorcing couples can, with their attorneys, negotiate and arrive at agreements on parenting and property, but sometimes that simply cannot happen. One party might be too angry or too hurt to deal reasonably with the other. Differences on important matters are simply too great and the court must be called on to decide these matters.

The goal in Ohio courts is to decide custody and parenting time matters in the best interests of the child. An experienced family law attorney helps you protect your children as you protect your interests as a parent at the same time.
