Why is divorce risker the second and third time around

As you recite your wedding vows, you may not anticipate filing for divorce years later. Yet, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report that at least half of all marriages in the United States end in divorce. While many people believe that their second and third attempt at wedded bliss may turn out better results, statistics show otherwise. The divorce rate for second marriages increases to 67 percent, and for third marriages to 73 percent. So why does the risk of divorce increase with each subsequent marriage?

Some believe that when you are involved in a second or third marriage, you are more familiar with the warning signs of impending doom. You may be quicker to bail out of the marriage when you see that things are not going the way you expected. Furthermore, many people are quick to enter into another marriage following a divorce. Marriage on the rebound may not bring successful results, as people tend to overlook negative personality traits when they are vulnerable from recently ending a marriage.

In some cases, people involved in a second and third marriage may not have children together, making it easier to cut out of the marriage. People who are financially independent may be less likely to stay with someone because of the financial benefits. Divorce may be easier the second or third time around because both parties are already aware of the process and know what to expect.
